Email is inherently insecure by design, but privacy-focused email services provide strong alternatives. This 2026 review compares the best encrypted email providers.

Service Comparison

ProtonMail: Swiss-based with strong privacy laws. E2E encryption by default for Proton-to-Proton emails. Open-source. Integrated calendar, VPN, and cloud storage. Free tier available.
Tutanota: Germany’s strong privacy laws. Built-in encrypted calendar. Automatic E2E encryption of subject lines — Gmail cannot scan Tutanota subjects. Open-source.
StartMail: Netherlands-based. Supports full IMAP/SMTP for any email client. One-click disposable email addresses.

Limitations

No encrypted email service can fully secure communication with non-encrypted email services — the message content is only encrypted between both parties using the same service.

Conclusion

ProtonMail is the best overall choice. Tutanota is ideal for users prioritizing automatic encryption and open-source values.
